L.A. Fashion Week Fall '07: Voom by Joy Han

Designer Joy Han could have been channeling Mary Quant, the English high priestess of ’60s fashion, when she created her Fall/Winter 2007 collection, shown March 18 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif.

Han, a graduate of the American InterContinental University in Los Angeles, took her interest in the Victorian period of the 19th century and mixed it up with the styles of the 1960s and 1970s to formulate her own view on fashion. “There are a lot of different things going on in the same direction,” explained Han. “I’m mixing things together to make a new look.”

Her new looks on the runway ranged from baby-doll dresses and boho mini dresses to wide-legged plaid pants and capelets done in rich fabrics. One distinctive mark in her collection was crisp ruffles seen around a pant waist or on a jumper’s straps. Thermal fabric was shaped into a baby-doll dress, as was quilted fabric looking as plush as a comforter.

Colorful fabrics, which Han said she designed, added an English flair to the lineup. There was anything from a Sherlock Holmes touch in the muted plaids to a Piccadilly Circus flair in the bright geometric designs splashed on silky fabric. Predominant colors were black, burgundy, red, yellow and silver. —Deborah Belgum
