L.A. Fashion Week Spring '08: Eduardo Lucero

Eduardo Lucero took inspiration from his surrounding for his runway show held Oct. 11 at the BoxEight shows at Vibiana, the arts venue located at the site of the former St. Vibiana Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles–based designer opened with a series of black gowns topped with sheer veils, hoods and headpieces that gently cupped the model’s faces. Lucero segued into a sophisticated black-and-white floral print and a series in navy, including a hooded dress in matte jersey with gold studs and a classic twist-front gown that has seams that curved around the body. A simple matte jersey gown had a cloud-like motif at the neckline, which the designer dubbed the “Hand of God” embroidery.

Styles started out tailored and form fitting, gradually giving way to a voluminous dress with a chrome horse bit marking a “T” on the open back.

And as the structure lighted, so did the palette, as Lucero introduced buttery crepes and lavender lace and satin that was used for layers of ruffles and precise cutwork styles.

“The world is a scary place right now, I didn’t want to do harsh colors,” he said, noting that he was looking for soft colors that were “inspired by spirituality.”

The designer closed with a series of gowns in an open-work fabric that has a design that spiraled around the torso and hips.
