L.A. Fashion Week Spring '08: Louis Verdad

BoxEight hosted Fashion Week favorite Louis Verdad’s Spring 2008 runway show on Oct. 11 at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles. Inspired by vintage wartime fashions and mod airline uniforms, Verdad’s eponymous line touched upon key styles from the 1940s through the 1960s. Twiggy shifts shared the runway with pinup-ready plaid jumpers, and dresses ranged from car dresses to kimono-inspired frocks. Pencil skirts, wide-leg trousers and nipped-in waists maintained Verdad’s old-school Hollywood-glamour vibe.

“I wanted to play with different lengths and proportions,” Verdad said after the show, adding that some details, including Lurex stripes and neo-military touches, lent the collection a “’Blade Runner’-ish vibe.”

Standout pieces from the collection included a slim polka-dot sheath with an oversize collar and corset-style belt, skinny nude cargo pants in a sandy taupe, and a zipper-front tuxedo jacket with puff sleeves and a wide silver bow belt. Evening gowns, all in satin, came in muted candy colors: baby blue, lavender, acid green and pink. Playing with proportion, Verdad showed gowns with exaggerated drop waists and oversize collars and bubble hems. One slinky black number featured an oversize flower anchoring a plunging neckline. Verdad also showed some casual pieces, including a printed mini-dress, plaid shorts, striped T-shirts, and lavender shorts with a high waist and plenty of volume. —Erin Barajas
