Michelle Yu: Art Meets Fashion

After six years designing for established companies, including Rock & Republic and BCBG, Michelle Yu thought it was a time for a big change.

The Los Angeles–based designer prepared for the change with one small step: She changed the color of her hair.

Later the newly minted platinum blonde took the more serious step and launched her own label, the Michelle Yu Collection, which debuted at the Pooltradeshow in Las Vegas in August.

The designer said she hopes that her first collection will have the same impact that a great new hairstyle can give somebody. It can demonstrate a flattering new perspective, a feeling of vitality and a stylish sense of humor.

Yu’s line is currently sold at the stylish Jeannie Y boutique, located on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Los Angeles’ Venice Beach neighborhood.

The 10-piece contemporary line draws from art-inspired looks and high-fashion silhouettes. The back of one blouse is reminiscent of the underside of a shiitake mushroom. The shoulders of one dress style and one top are shaped like chic capelets.

Yu uses luxe fabric, including stretch silk and silk voile in black, gunmetal gray, gold and purple. Wholesale price points range from $80 to $230.

Yu is currently planning a 20-piece Fall 2008 collection based on a tailored menswear theme.
