Galanos Honored at Rodeo Drive Walk of Style

James Galanos helped pioneer California fashion when he debuted the Galanos Originals fashion label in 1951. He retired in 1998, but he will be honored in his fashion label’s hometown on Oct. 18, when he receives a plaque on the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style.

One of his most famous clients, Nancy Reagan, will be the honorary co-chair of the celebration of Galanos’ work. The former first lady wore a Galanos gown to the inauguration of President Ronald Reagan in 1981. She also reportedly wore Galanos’ work to Ronald Reagan’s inauguration as the governor of California in 1966.

Galanos will be feted at a luncheon attended by a crowd of 140 people at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Oct. 18, said Peri Ellen Berne, co-chair of the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style. The walk also will sponsor a special outdoor exhibition of photo portraits of Galanos’ work. The exhibition will be posted on Rodeo and will be up from Oct. 14 to 28.

The Walk of Style honored Gianni and Donatella Versace earlier this year. Last year it honored Salvatore Ferragamo, Edith Head, James Acheson and Milena Canonero. Past honorees have also included Herb Ritts, Mario Testino, Tom Ford and Giorgio Armani. The Walk of Style debuted in 2003. —Andrew Asch
