Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swimshy;/Cruise 2009: Tommy Bahama

Nautical blues and whites, check. Safari-inspired spots and stripes, check. Tropical floral prints, check. With its July 18 show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim at The Raleigh hotel, Tommy Bahama showed classic, destination-inspired swimwear and loungewear for men and women. Whether inspired by landlocked adventures or seaside locales, Tommy Bahama’s collection ran like a “best hits” parade. One-pieces were demure and conservative; bikinis ranged from classic Gidget to sexy mama on the prowl. Guys got breezy woven shirts, crisp five-pocket jeans and no-frills boardshorts. Special touches, such as bikini ties in contrasting fabric and florals rendered in unexpected black and white, added a modern twist. Coverups played a big part of the collection. Matching coverups added another dimension of versatility. Printed chiffon sarongs, embroidered tunics, slim skirts, lounge pants and hoodies took Tommy Bahama’s collection from the beach to the street. Standout pieces included a slinky skirt and a floral ’50s-style strapless dress that is perfect for a garden party. —Erin Barajas
