Solis Said to Be Tapped for Labor

U.S. Rep. Hilda Solis (D–Calif.) is expected to be named secretary of labor by President-elect Barack Obama, according to several news reports.

Solis represents the 32nd District, which includes portions of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley, including Baldwin Park, West Covina, El Monte and Azusa.

Another Congressional representative from California, Xavier Becerra, was reported to be a top contender for U.S. trade representative.

Becerra represents the 31st District, which includes parts of central Los Angeles, including Koreatown and Pico Union, as well as part of the city’s Northeastern section, including Silver Lake and Highland Park. But the representative told the Associated Press that he took his name out of the running because he wanted to remain in the House of Representatives to focus on other issues, including immigration reform and universal health care.—Alison A.
