Salt Swimwear: Salt of the Sea

For the woman who desires some fashion, luxury and value in her swimwear, Salt Swimwear may be an option.

Up-and-coming Los Angeles–based designer Layla Paxzad has spent the past few years traveling and living in many parts of the United States, including Santa Barbara, Calif.; Los Angeles; and New York. From that vantage, she saw a void in the swimwear market for fashion and value. Women were paying hundreds of dollars for suits, but Paxzad did not think these brands brought very much newness to the market. So after returning from a trip to Vietnam, she launched Salt last season.

“It’s a contemporary, sort of a fashion-forward spin using high-end fabrics, detailed fits and having a luxury feel, with covered buttons and attention to detail,” she said.

While in Vietnam, Paxzad happened to encounter a few production shops where she was able to gather her own fabrics and give the shop owner a design to sew together—and presto, a swimsuit line was born.

“That gave me the impetus because I had designed dresses and other garments before,” said the former retailer and stylist.

Salt features about 10 mix-and-match styles with some inspiration from the ’70s and European beaches. Styles include ruffled one-pieces, triangle tops, ruffled bandeaus, halters, tie-string bottoms and booty shorts. Looks come in metallics and solid colors such as chocolate, canary, blue, mint and cream. Wholesale price points average about $75 per piece. The suits are made from nylon/Spandex blends and are sold to boutiques including Planet Blue, Diane’s and Madison. For information, call (213) 489-9050 or visit www.saltswimwear.com.
