L.A. Fashion Week Fall '08: Green is the New Black

The “Green is the New Black” fashion show, held on March 6 at the House of Petals in West Hollywood, Calif., kicked off the first of several fashion shows featuring eco-friendly clothing at Los Angeles Fashion Week.

The show featured several local designers as well as contributions from retailers and showrooms that highlight organic and sustainable clothing. Proceeds from the show benefit Brad Pitt’s Make It Right foundation (www.makeitrightnola.org), an organization dedicated to helping rebuild New Orleans.

EcoGanik showed soft feminine dresses made from organic Pima cotton and fleece while ecoSkin featured bamboo, organic cotton and other earth-friendly fibers. Clothing of the American Mind showed its line of novelty message tees with recycle icons and other symbols. Rebe highlighted coats and jackets made from recycled materials while Natural High’s yoga-friendly tops and bottoms featured organic fibers as well as vegetal leathers. The Joken Style showroom in Los Angeles showed graphic tees and outerwear from Venice, Calif.–based SubUrban Riot while the Menemsha boutique in Studio City, Calif., highlighted its own line, featuring tops made from fabrics that were actually painted by protected elephants in Thailand as part of that country’s Elephant Art Project.
