Anchors Away

The Mexican government is pushing ahead to develop a massive port in Punta Colonet in Baja California. The government formally opened the bidding process on the giant project, which could one day rival the ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach. However, the project has a few hurdles to clear, such as a legal tussle over the proposed port’s mineral rights and the fact that a railroad line to the United States has to cross steep mountains with a high grade. Also, the expansion of the Panama Canal means more shippers will be taking the all-water route from Asia to the United States’ East Coast.
