L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: Julia Clancey

British designer Julia Clancey returned for a second season Oct. 13 to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif., where she brought her signature fairytale-goes-to-the-ball aesthetic. To set the other-wordly scene, Clancey opened her show with a performance by an opera singer dressed in a gown with sleeves that resembled butterfly wings.

Clancey’s gowns and dresses were equal parts whimsy and vintage-inspired. Flapper-esque dresses featured dropped waists and layers of oversized scallops. Grecian-inspired gowns were tinged with ’70s glamour and row upon row of bugle beads. Mod little numbers dripped in tonal crystals. A series of tonal floor-sweeping gowns and caftans were crowd favorites. The designer, now based in California, opted for sunny colors, choosing rich turquoise, melon, yellow, green and brightest white. —Erin Barajas
