L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: Anzevino and Florence

Imagine if Goldilocks landed on the moon in a ballet dress. That was the look of the Anzevino and Florence Spring collection, shown Oct. 18 at BoxEight in Los Angeles. Designer William Anzevino said he and partner Richard Florence were picturing a fairy tale girl who walks through the forest but ends up somewhere in the future.

They experimented with the idea of layering fabrics and the effects of overlapping various colors—much like prisms or rainbows. To add a futuristic edge, they used flashlights as necklaces to illuminate the sheer layers. The look was feminine yet modern with a touch of fairy tale romance. A silk-organza ballet dress found modernity with pleated-waist details and romantic ruffles decorated a jacket and short ensemble. One of the most beautiful pieces was an organza tank dress that came in shades of red, pink and black.

For guys, a relaxed modernity defined the collection with silhouettes that ranged from fitted to oversize. There were luxe knit cardigans paired with slouchy denim/linen trousers and sheer silk jersey tees paired with khaki pants. —N. Jayne Seward
