L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: MartinMartin

After several seasons away from the runway, MartinMartin returned, showing Oct. 18 at BoxEight in Los Angeles.

Husband-and-wife design team Eric Martin and Diane Moss-Martin took their signature minimalist avant-garde look in new directions with new silhouettes, new fabrics and new treatments.

The Martins offered origami-folded skirts paired with lofty sweaters that wrapped the body. (The sweaters, made from cashmere and ecocotton yarns, can be worn wrapped or unwrapped and can be flipped over for a different look.) A new tailored jacket style featured exposed shoulders and innovative strapping that laced across the chest.

The designers dove headlong into menswear, presenting tailored jackets, trousers, jeans and athletic-inspired sportswear pieces.

Pieces were hand-dipped dyed for a gradient effect, and jackets featured zippers that ran up the spine. A hooded jacket featured three zippers that circumnavigated the skull, and jeans ranged from stovepipe to skin-tight. —Alison A. Nieder
