L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: Tulle and Cloth Logic

Men and women shared the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif., for the Spring ’09 collection of two distinct labels, Tulle and Cloth Logic, made by the same Los Angeles company.

Morning Glory Inc. was founded in 1999 to make outerwear for women but eventually expanded to a full women’s collection under the Tulle label. Most recently, a young contemporary men’s line was added under the Cloth Logic label.

The show on Oct. 16 had a certain 1950s feel. Tulle designers Jennifer Smith and Anoushka Alden said their inspiration for their most recent collection was spring fever, when young people are cruising on vintage bikes, checking out the opposite sex. “It’s the first glimpse of spring that makes you excited,” Smith said. The duo presented very delicate, feminine looks that relied on high-waist skirts, capri pants and finely knit cardigans or knit dresses trimmed with ruffles to get across a bold, romantic message. Even the models had that 1950s feel, with puffed-up hair that looked like cotton candy.

On the menswear side, Cloth Logic designer Leon Shpayer, a native of Russia, also took his cue from vintage looks that consisted mostly of sleek V-neck cardigans and sweater vests accented with stripes seen on the edges of collars, hems and pockets or up and down the front. Jackets and windbreakers were also understated. —Deborah Belgum
