L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: Born Uniqorn

Hollywood fashion label Born Uniqorn might seem tailored for the party life, but co-founders Taryn Manning and Tara Jane showed the line’s practical side at an Oct. 17 installation at The Park Showroom in the Lady Liberty building in downtown Los Angeles.

The line’s Spring 2009 looks tried to balance fashion and consumer’s needs to stretch a dollar. The garments used mostly low-maintenance cotton jersey and relied on solid colors, which the designers believe can be mixed and matched with greater ease than other designs.

Tilting more toward fashion, looks featured a snakeskin, burn-out print on a maxi-dress. Another style was a ruffle dress with a low-plunging neckline. The line offered a cropped jacket and a cotton canvas shorts with suspenders. Some of the line’s Aquarian-age details included a feather tied to the end of a nylon string called a rainbow cord.

Once the Born Uniqorn’s practical side was exhibited, Manning also showed the label’s party side. Her band Boomkat performed at the party, and she sang to a cheering crowd. —Andrew Asch
