Mood Pops Up in Downtown L.A.

Mood Designer Fabrics has landed in downtown Los Angeles. The growingly popular fabrics store, which has been featured on “Project Runway” and “The Apprentice,” will open a pop-up shop of sorts on the ground floor of the California Market Center’s Los Angeles Street entrance Oct. 6.

The fabric supplier, known for its variety of high-end materials, is testing the downtown market for a month. If all goes well, it will become a more permanent fixture.

“We’re testing the waters,” said company Principal Philip Sauma. “We will feature select high-end (American and European) fabrics, stuff you would see on the runway.”

The store will operate as a wholesale and retail operation, opening its doors to the public.

Downtown is flooded with discount and moderate textiles, so Sauma wants to see how the higher-priced materials will fare.

“You will not see any polyester here,” Sauma said. “Silks, cashmere, embroidery, novelty knits, yes, but no polyester.”

The store will be open during the Los Angeles International Textile Show Oct. 27–29 at the CMC and then is scheduled to close Oct. 31 until further notice.

The 5,000-square-foot CMC store is tiny compared with its 40,000-square-foot New York Garment District showroom. The company opened a 12,000-square-foot unit on Pico Boulevard about 18 months ago.
