Out of the Ordinary: Old/New Fashion for Eco-Cause

For some, Earth Day might be nothing more than an excuse to drink eco-friendly cocktails. But for designers Juan Carlos Obando and Magda Berliner, Earth Day 2009 will be a chance to design for environmental causes.

They and more than nine other fashion designers put together new fashions for upcoming Earth Day fund-raiser Out of the Ordinary for premier vintage shop The Way We Wore, located at 334 S. La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles. The designers started with vintage clothes and cut them into sleek new fashions.

Berliner took a long 1960s Oscar De La Renta gown and made it into a mini-dress with a zig-zag hem. Obando took a day dress and transformed it into a skirt and jacket. Designers of fashion line Current Elliot took a green chiffon dress and made it into a chic, one-shoulder dress that actress Emma Roberts recently wore on “The Tonight Show.”

The Out of the Ordinary eBay fund-raiser starts Earth Day—April 22—with an online auction www.ebay.com/thewaywewore. The repurposed fashions will be auctioned off to raise funds for New York–based nonprofit Earth Pledge. These eco-business consultants started Future Fashion, an eco-initiative for the schmatte trade.

Other designers participating will be Michalyn Andrews of Trasterverine, Summer Phoenix, Odessa Whitmire, Ruby Canner, Jeremy Scott, Kevan Hall, Michael Angel and Lotta Stensson.
