Miami Swim Fashion Week Cruise 2010: Red Carter

Red Carter always delivers a rockin’ fashion show and his Resort 2010 show presented on July 17 during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim was no different. “Rock ’n’ roll space hooker circa 1984” was the theme for the cheeky South Beach–based designer’s collection full of innovative styles and swimwear shapes. “I believe we should keep things interesting,” said the designer who said he isn’t daunted by the economy. “I believe now is a time when we need to take some risks and try to move fashion forward,” he said. The collection included a variety of ethnic inspired prints, 1980’s rock ’n’ roll looks and an ode to the avant garde with innovative space-age treatments.

The bright ’80s palette was incorporated into exotic animal prints and bold graphic suits. Carter utilized beading details and experimented with shoulder and hip treatments to push the fashion edge. “I want to take the body in new directions,” Carter said. “I felt it was really important to try to challenge the idea of what swimsuit is,” he explained. Highlights included an asymmetric zebra-print one-piece, a sexy slashed-front black maillot and a gray cutout one-piece with sculpted space-age shoulders. —N. Jayne Seward
