Avery Debuts CPSIA Labeling Product

Pasadena, Calif.–based Avery Dennison has developed a labeling system aimed at helping manufacturers comply with shipping aspects of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).

CPSIA provides safeguards for consumers against children’s products that contain lead and other hazardous materials by mandating testing of products for lead and other substances. The law requires manufacturers to account for the origin of products such as apparel, home furnishings and toys. It also requires the proper labeling of merchandise with information pertaining to where and when it was manufactured.

Avery’s solution comes via its Universal Track and Trace system, which includes printers, tags-and-label design software, and D2Comm data-management software.

“It allows users to print and capture the specific label data that is mandated byCPSIA and then add a unique serial number on the label that ties it to additional production data. And we can make all this available online,” said Michael Dancausse, product manager of in-plant printing solutions.

The system is partially Internet-based. Users print a contractor label and then connect to Avery’s D2Comm Web site to capture all the production data. The system helps eliminate the need to keep separate records.
