Orpheum, CMC to Host Daytime Emmys

The Los Angeles Fashion District will show its Hollywood side on Aug. 30, when, for the first time, it hosts the 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

The Orpheum Theatre will host the actual awards ceremony. The California Market Center will host the after party. Vanessa Williams is hosting the event, which honors the best of daytime television programming, including soap operas, morning news programs, talk shows, cooking shows, children’s programs and documentaries.

The event will broadcast Aug. 30 on the CW network.

The event is likely to bring the biggest draw of celebrities and media to the Fashion District in some time.

“It’s exciting. [The Orpheum, Fashion District and the CMC] worked hard to bring this event here,” said Kent Smith, executive director of the Fashion District. “Hollywood is starting to take notice of what we have here.”

“It shows the caliber of shows we can do here,” added Steve Needleman, president of ANJAC Fashion Properties, which owns the historic Orpheum Theatre. “Downtown provides a unique and different atmosphere. It’s great boost for the area.”

The awards were previously held at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood and Madison Square Garden in New York.

The move to the Orpheum adds to the venue’s growing reacute;sumeacute;, which includes hosting events such as “American Idol,” the Bravo TV “A-List Awards,” the Latin Sports awards and the Ovation theater awards.

This fall, Roger Daltrey of The Who will be among the list of acts performing. The Fashion District has been in the spotlight as of late. It appears as one of the main backdrops in the current film release “500 Days of Summer” and in the latest edition of “Project Runway.”—Robert McAllister
