Unifi Offers 'U Trust' Traceability Program for Its Reprieve Recycled Program

Greensboro, N.C.–based fiber maker Unifi Inc. continues to expand its recycled polyester and nylon fiber program and has added a traceability program to allow customers to track fabrics back to the source to verify the recycled-fiber content.

Unifi’s Reprieve product line includes recycled filament polyester, made from recycled PET bottles. Reprieve is available in a 100 percent post-consumer content form and in a “hybrid blend” of pre-consumer and post-consumer waste. There is also a Reprieve nylon 6.6 fiber made from recycled filament nylon 6.6. In addition, there is a Reprieve fiber made from recycled polyester staple fibers and products made from recycled performance fibers, including fibers available with specialty characteristics such as stretch, flame-retardant and moisture-management properties.

The U Trust program allows Unifi customers to trace fabrics made from Reprieve back to the fiber level. In addition, U Trust includes Fingerprint technology, which allows customers to analyze fabrics for the “Fingerprint signature” to verify the level of Reprieve content in the fabric.

Unifi’s Reprieve manufacturing process was recently featured on the Travel Channel’s “Extreme” series, which highlighted America’s “most cutting-edge factories.” The fiber maker’s facility in Yadkinville, N.C., was included in the program, which aired on the cable channel on Aug. 26.“Unifi has a company-wide commitment to reduce our environmental impact, and this show [demonstrates] how seriously we take this responsibility,” said Roger Berrier, Unifi’s executive vice president. “We hope that a product like Reprieve will inspire consumers and others in our industry to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.” —Alison A.
