A New Kind of Art T

Marshmallow T-shirt by Doktor Doktor

The humble white T-shirt has been elevated to interesting new heights by Project White T-shirt, an international project dreamed up by Triple-Major Studio that asks 31 designers from 13 countries to re-imagine the white T-shirt as something new.

The designers, which include cult faves such as Complex Geometries, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, Unholy Matrimony and Slow And Steady Wins The Race, were free to do create just about anything from their T-shirts - and some did some pretty wacky stuff. A'N'D linked three T-shirts together and provided markers for their "Grafi-tee" so the wearers could draw on themselves and each other before cutting the chord that linked their shirts. Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair knit, twisted and tied their T-shirt into an oversized necklace. Doktor Doktor covered its T-shirt in more than 2,000 marshmallows. German brand Anntian made a T-shirt for a horse and then took that T-shirt and tailored it to fit a person. Complex Geometries made a T-shirt that can be worn by two people at once - or just a single person if they don't want to wander around stuck to another person all day. Chinese brand Creature de Keis took a new approach to the "one-size-fits-all" concept and combined a small, medium and large T-shirt into a single garment so that wearers of different sizes can customize their fit.

All of the T-shirts will be auctioned to benefit Designers Against AIDS. An exhibition, hosted at the Welcome Hunters store in Los Angeles on Dec. 19, will be the first time shoppers will get an in-person glimpse of the T-shirts. Space 15 Twenty Gallery in Los Angeles will host the exhibition in February.
