REI's Anderson Turns 100

Seattle-based outdoor-equipment and apparel retailer REI created the Mary Anderson Legacy Grant in honor of founder Mary Anderson’s 100th birthday. The annual grant will be presented in honor of the contributions that Anderson made in the lives of young people. The first $50,000 Mary Anderson Legacy Grant will be awarded in 2010 in support of efforts that encourage young people to learn about nature through exploration of the outdoors. Mary Anderson and her husband, Lloyd, teamed up with 21 mountaineering friends in Seattle to found REI in 1938. Today, the company has 110 stores and nearly 10,000 employees.
