200 Cupcakes and Santa, Too

I’m still kicking myself that I missed the annual Christmas party thrown Dec. 18 by the Textile Association of Los Angeles. (In 11 years at Apparel News, this is only the second time I’ve missed the event).

Every year, TALA invites kids from local boys and girls clubs to have a traditional Christmas party complete with goodies, gifts, caroling and a visit from Santa. This year, there were 120 children from six after-school centers, including a group who arrived wearing reindeer antlers.

The event is a volunteer effort that brings out the apparel industry’s generous side.

The Cooper Design Space donated the space—the fabulous penthouse with panoramic views of downtown Los Angeles. TALA member Terrence Chermak told me the place was decorated to the nines with “thousands of icicle lights, hundreds of white balloons, fake snow and white trees.”

Although I’m sure the 200 (!) cupcakes were a huge hit with the kids, the highlight was, no doubt, the visit from Santa.

“Of course, Santa came and gave out hundreds (yes, hundreds) of toys,” Chermak said.

Chermak and fellow TALA members Fran Sude, Jack Jay, Ann Davis, Eileen Ellis and Brian Thaler organized the party—and Michael Goldstein reprised his role as Santa.

Trimana supplied hot dogs, chips and ice; Nemco Foods and Frank Neimeroff donated all the drinks.
