Keep on Shipping

California’s ports may be seeing fewer cargo containers coming across the docks. But one thing is for sure—cargo exports at the state’s major sea hubs are definitely up. At the Port of Oakland, exports in November jumped nearly 40 percent compared with the same month last year. Export activity at Oakland has been strong since June. Overall, November’s port traffic was down only 1.2 percent over last year. At the Port of Los Angeles, November exports were up nearly 20 percent, with overall traffic down 12 percent. And at the Port of Long Beach, which has been hardest hit by fewer mega-container ships calling, exports inched up 4 percent while overall traffic in November was off by nearly 20 percent. A rise in U.S. exports is attributed to Asian economies rebounding and growing strongly.
