Container Traffic at Ports Dips in November

It’s no surprise that cargo volumes at the Los Angeles–area ports are down as retailers are stocking fewer items on their shelves.

In November, the Port of Long Beach saw an 8.9 percent decline in cargo-container volume compared with the same period last year, handling 557,459 20-foot containers.

For the first 11 months of 2008, cargo-container traffic in Long Beach was down 10.1 percent to 6 million 20-foot containers compared with 2007.

At the neighboring Port of Los Angeles, cargo-container volume in November was down 10.36 percent to 660,046 20-foot containers compared with last year.

For the first 11 months of 2008, the Port of Los Angeles saw a 5.26 percent dip in volume with 7.28 million 20-foot containers going through the docks. —Deborah Belgum
