New Customs Rule Goes Into Effect for Shippers

Importers bringing in goods by ship must now provide additional cargo data 24 hours before their goods set sail for the United States.

The new ruling, called the 10+2 Rule, went into effect on Jan. 26. Under the Customs and Border Protection rule, importers must provide 10 data items that include identification of the manufacturer, supplier, seller, buyer and consignee, country of origin, tariff classification number, where and by whom the goods were stuffed into a container, and the party responsible for complying with the import requirements. —Deborah Belgum
