Miami Swim Fashion Week Cruise 2010: Shay Todd

Shay Todd, best known for dressing Hollywood’s elite for the beach, brought an ’80’s flair to the runway in Miami. Todd showcased her Cruise 2010 collection on July 17 at the recently opened WET at W South Beach.

Despite strong winds and rain that nearly halted the production, Todd presented her collection on the spectacular runway set over the hotel’s pool. Todd’s revisited her past channeling the era of neon, punk and prep into four distinct groups. High gloss, studding and sexy lace-up details captured the androgynous underground look of Grace Jones and Nina Hagen. And crisp preppy styles in bright white and pastel shades were reminiscent of the ’80s Ivy League crowd straight out of a John Hughes film.

Todd utilized vivid colors, lace and exaggerated silhouettes for a B52’s meets Madonna look and visited the bohemian side of the era with bright prints and subdued tones. Standout looks included the hot-pink high-waist bikini that opened the show, a black one-piece with lace-up sides and a full-length gown with a colorful tie-dye effect. —N. Jayne Seward
