Los Angeles Fashion Week Spring 2002: Gen Art#039;s Fresh Faces in Fashion

Classic silhouettes met the bold and the brazen during Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion, the kickoff show for Los Angeles Fashion Week. The event was held on Nov. 1 in the historic Los Angeles Theatre, whose old confines provided a contrasting backdrop for new looks from emerging West Coast designers including Eisbar, O Maillots de Bains, Corey Lynn Calter, Development, Josh & He Yang, Rami Kashou, MartinMartin and Shawn. Accessories by Tres Flores, Pent Mfg., Monika and Hand Maid were also on exhibit.

Styles ranged from classics with all-white Asian-influenced ensembles from Eric Martin and Diane Moss-Martin’s MartinMartin collection, to punkish and man-tailored looks from Yohanna Logan for her Shawn label, to sexy with Brazilian and French swimsuits by Kristen Ehrig for O Maillots de Bains. Josh Grenel and He Yang showed an eclectic collection with quilted woolen fabrics in skirt and pants sets, while sheer looks were prominent for Rami Kashou’s eveningwear set. Phillip Lim of Development highlighted casuals in the form of printed Hawaiian tanks, army jackets and sheer wrap dresses. Corey Lynn Calter incorporated corsets and baby-doll dress along with gingham tops. And Eisbar went for Hollywood meets Malibu with jeans, cutoff tees and plenty of white for its spring collection.

The event, which was the fourth edition of Fresh Faces in Fashion held on the West Coast, was held in downtown Los Angeles as a way to support the area’s revitalization efforts, according to Gen Art West Coast director Megan Griffith. The show drew a crowd of 1,400, with notable attendees including Tori Spelling, Anthony Kiedis, Dominique Swain, Paris Hilton and Jessica Beale. —Robert McAllister
