Obituary: Bob Schwager, Avery Dennison

Former Avery Dennison and Paxar Corp. executive Bob Schwager passed away on Feb. 24 in Danbury, Conn., after a four-month battle with brain cancer. He was 73.

Schwager spent 38 years with Paxar/Avery, where he spearheaded the launch and acquisition of key businesses that are central to the company’s operations.

He began his career in 1958 with Dennison Corp., which merged with Avery Corp. in 1990. He eventually moved to Paxar Corp., which acquired Avery Dennison in 2007.

He held a number of key positions, including vice president and general manager of Paxar’s tag and label division, vice president and general manager of Paxar’s Sayre and coated-products division, vice president and general manager of new acquisitions, and vice president and general manager of the woven-label division. He retired in 2006 in Henderson, Nev.

“Bob had a passion for the customer and the product. A brilliant raconteur, he had a delightful sense of humor and a seemingly endless repertoire of jokes. He leaves behind many friends in many countries,” said James Wrigley, vice president and general manger of Paxar’s South Asia division.

Schwager is survived by his wife, three children and six grandchildren. —Robert McAllister
