Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '09: Yotam Solomon

Emerging designer Yotam Solomon continued to experiment with shape for his Fall/Winter collection, which debuted March 15 at the Los Angeles Theatre as part of BOXeight Fashion Week.

Solomon, who was recently named Los Angeles’ “Top Young Designer” by America Online’s StyleList, incorporated natural and urban influences into his “Ocean Collection” of ready-to-wear and footwear.

Solomon drew from two bodies of water, the Mediterranean Sea, near his birthplace of Haifa, Israel, and the Pacific Ocean, near his Los Angeles home.

The designer, who graduated two years ago from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, eased off his signature deconstruction techniques and opted for more form-fitting bodies using conceptual fabrics in cotton and silk.

The looks included short strapless dresses and iridescent bubble skirts. He opened up sleeves and combined mesh panels and webbed overlays on some pieces.

“This is something everyone can wear, perfect for mixing with heavier layers. There is a unique style to this collection that suits the jetsetter or the fashionista. There is something for everyone,” he said. —Robert McAllister
