Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '09: Jen Awad

As the lead singer/songwriter and rhythm guitarist for the band The Great Entity, Jen Awad designed her skin-baring clothing to command center stage, whether on the designer herself or as clubwear for like-minded girls with a taste for the risqueacute;. The recent Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising graduate presented her collection, “Flamenco Rock,” during BOXeight Fashion Week at the Los Angeles Theatre on March 14.

Awad’s flamenco theme branched out from a gold ruched satin and lace dress into colorful satin dresses and suits with touches of lace and feathers. The rock side had a louder voice, including faux-leather pants that laced up the sides and a purple sequined mid-drift top and skirt topped off by a faux leather vest.

The designer was not shy about the fact that some of her dresses were micro mini, pants hugged below the hips and cutouts bared flesh. “I want to give people the option. If they want to play around, if they want to wear bright purples, sequins, or big flowers in their hair and mini-dresses with stockings, they can do that,” Awad said. “If they want to look like a slut, look like a slut. But at least look like a different kind.” —Rhea Cortado
