New Resources Guide: Civil Smith

Though new on the scene for Fall 2009, Civil Smith is built on the considerable expertise of its four founders. Hailing from brands such as Bread Denim, Von Dutch, Blue Holdings, Guess?, Diesel and Rock & Republic, principals Scott Luirette, Lia Fisher, Dan Barton and Jason Ferro have denim pedigree in spades. Civil Smith, which debuted at the Project Global Trade Show in Las Vegas earlier this year, offers both men’s and women’s styles. The workwear-inspired line is packed with easy, wearable men’s silhouettes. “Target customer is a grab-and-go type of guy,” Barton said. “Our guy likes style and comfort at an affordable price point. He is aged 18–35, has some disposable income, is fashion-savvy and reads Flaunt, Nylon, Rolling Stone and Men’s Health. He is educated, takes his music seriously and likes to travel.”

Key pieces for the men’s collection include Chinos and non-denim bottoms, wovens, flannels and knits. While Civil Smith is building its reputation on trend-right and price-conscious pieces, there are plans to expand. “We want to expand into accessories within the next season or two and really develop our company as a lifestyle brand,” Barton said. The line has been well-received, debuting in retailers such as Atrium NYC, E Street Denim, Fred Segal and Beams Japan.—Erin Barajas
