Green Glamour: Eco Friendly and Made in L.A.

When Anna MacMassey was creating Green Glamour, a new line of loungewear and sleepwear, she knew the basic ingredient had to be first-class organic-cotton fabric.

“It’s the Cadillac of all the fabrics in organic,” she said.

MacMassey developed a long-staple, organic Pima cotton-knit fabric specifically for her line, using her nearly 20 years of experience as a textile designer and merchandiser specializing in knits.

About five years ago, MacMassey started tinkering with organic yarns while working as the vice president of merchandising and design for Los Angeles–based Antex Knitting Mills, where she still works. Antex is a partner with MacMassey in Green Glamour.

“For the last 12 years, I have been using organic products in food. When this came into our part of the business, I was very eager to jump on it and explore it. We bought many different [organic] yarns to test,” MacMassey said.

She launched Green Glamour loungewear for Spring 2010 after seeing a void in the market for modern, eco-friendly loungewear at affordable prices.

“This line is priced like other lines that are not really eco-friendly. We are looking for longevity and making a statement: an American line, made here, very affordable for the level that it is. We want to show that you can make garments [that are] beautiful [and] eco-friendly for the same price that you make them in China. We can be very competitive here,” MacMassey said.

Wholesale price points range from $27.50 for a chemise to $31 for lounge pants and $41 for a hooded robe.

Since Green Glamour’s focal point is ultra-soft interlock organic-cotton fabric, the styles are subtle and classically elegant in loose, comfortable shapes.

The sophisticated palette of gray with white trim, white with pink trim and black with mocha trim can be worn year-round. By using contrasting silk accents, instead of the lace that is traditionally used in sleepwear, the pants, robes and tops are multifunctional and can be worn outside the home.
