RFID Hits the Sales Floor

An upcoming industry event in Fayetteville, Ark., will examine the commercial viability of RFID tagging items on the retail sales floor. The Oct. 27–28 event at the University of Arkansas is organized by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. CSCMP and the Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions (VICS) Association sponsored a study at Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Jones Apparel Group. Conducted by the Information Technology Research Institute at the Sam M. Walton College of Business, University of Arkansas, the survey looked at using RFID to address retail issues such as loss prevention, inventory accuracy, out-of-stock merchandise and cycle-count accuracy. Representatives from the retailers and manufacturers—including Pam Sweeney, senior vice president, systems, for Macy’s logistics and operations; Roger Blazek, vice president, shortage control for Bloomingdale’s; and Norm Veit, executive vice president, MIS for Jones Apparel Group Inc.—will present their findings at the conference.
