'This Machine Kills Fashists'

Designer Christopher Nemeth has lived in Japan for 23 years and his take on fashion is so neat—because it isn't all about fashion.

The Selby, the fantastic site that is like Cobrasnake-meets-The Sartorialist, recently photographed the designer and his work and studio. I couldn’t be more delighted. Everything the man does feels crafted and chic and quirky.

His studio is like a shrine to his design work. Past prints and even garment patterns are framed on the walls. Easles and work tables are etched with Nemeth’s organic, Escher-like graphics, elevating them to art. Even his dress form is super special, having had one of the designer’s classic prints drawn on it. Little touches abound that suggest Nemeth’s unique aesthetic. His Mitsubishi sewing machine is scribbled on, bearing the quips “Protest Singer” and “This Machine Kills Fashists.”

Equally playful/serious is Nemeth’s clothing. A deconstructed jacket is covered in buttons that dangle yards of rope. Leather boots are covered in patches of houndstooth. A pair of pink shorts features leather cuffs and crotch that drops to the knees. Visit The Selby for the complete shoot.
