L.A. Fashion Week Spring 2010: Mode Israel

Israeli fashion made its first splash Oct. 14 at Downtown L.A. Fashion Week in the gallery space Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. The event demonstrated that Israeli fashion is more than swimsuits and casual basics often worn at the Mediterranean country’s beaches and cafes.

Israeli label Shai Shalom was one of the eight designers which took the runway. Blazers and evening gowns were part of the designer’s aesthetic. Kedem Sasson gave aspiring designers advice in Israel’s version of “Project Runway.” In Mode Israel, he used avant garde shapes to make his collection’s statement for Spring 2010.

Keren Naftali showed contemporary dresses with art details. Bracha Bar On offered casual and contemporary looks for women with stripped shirts and some wraps made out of sheer fabric. Yosef designer Yosef Peretz made colorful, summery dresses. Sugar Daddy designed graphic T-shirt dresses with brash designs. Alembika offered art inspired, contemporary looks with bold color. The Bet Ka label showed contemporary dresses and pants with a simple elegance. The show kicked off with a performance from Israeli dance rock band Terry Poison.—Andrew Asch
