Malibu Village's Facelift Begins

Malibu Village sometimes played second fiddle to its more glamorous neighbors—the Malibu Country Mart and Malibu Lumber Yard retail centers. However, a renovation project that started June 21 might make Malibu Village more attractive to luxury shoppers.

Construction started on a more than $4 million renovation project for the 40-year-old Malibu Village, an L-shaped strip mall located across the street from the Pacific Ocean. With tenants such as Radio Shack and a shoe-repair shop, the village has been popular with the wealthy beach city’s residents looking for service retail. However, when the renovation project is completed in January 2011, Malibu Village will balance service retail and unique fashion and luxury boutiques, said Pouya Abdi, the principal of Retail Holdings Group, a Los Angeles–based property-development company.

Missoni, True Religion and Levi’s are some of Malibu Village’s new tenants. Los Angeles–based Marmol Radziner and Associates provided construction services as well as the architecture for the new look of the old mall.

Abdi said the old exteriors of the mall would be replaced by wood storefronts, which would offer a look reminiscent of The Hamptons, the New York beach getaway area. The renovation would also build three grassy/green areas suitable for picnicking or lounging.—Andrew Asch
