REI to Open in Maryland
Seattle-based retail co-op Recreational Equipment Inc. will open a 24,000-square-foot store in Columbia, Md., this fall. The store will carry equipment and apparel for climbing, cycling, fitness, hiking, paddling, snow sports and travel. REI operates 112 retail stores across the country. REI stores are open to the public, but the company also invites shoppers to become members by paying a one-time fee of $20. Members receive discounts, trip offers and classes, as well as a share in REI’s profits through a refund program based on purchases. The company currently has 3.9 million active members.
