Solving Retail Crime

The National Retail Federation is urging the House of Representatives to pass a bill that would set up a section in the Department of Justice to investigate organized retail crime. The House is expected to vote soon on H.R. 5932, the Organized Retail Theft Investigation and Prosecution Act of 2010. The bill would allot $5 million a year between fiscal years 2011 and 2015 to fund a program that employs investigators, prosecutors and other personnel to tackle organized retail crime. The FBI says the U.S. retail industry loses between $15 billion to $30 billion a year to organized retail crime that targets everyday consumer products that are in high demand and easy to steal such as designer clothing.
