GAP's Fall and Holiday Collections: Beyond Denim

Model Behavior: GAP's models showcase modern cuts and animal prints for the Fall/Holiday collections.

GAP previewed its latest lines at its downtown Los Angeles design studio Wednesday, featuring more fashion-forward looks for Fall and Holiday.

“Everything goes beyond denim and beyond indigo,” said Nicole King-Burroughs, designer for GAP’s women’s line.

The new 1969 Denim Collection features premium fabrics, more sophisticated cuts and luxe, highly-saturated colors.

King-Burroughs described the corduroy used for the line as “luxurious” and “so refined it almost looks like velvet.” The fabric also contains Tencel, which provides a much softer drape than traditional corduroy.

GAP channeled its wild side with tight, animal-print skinny jeans and pencil skirts in gray and brown leopard, snake and cheetah patterns. The jeans, which will retail for $69.95, can be worn casually or paired with heels and a short jacket for dressing up.

Designers also looked to the past for inspiration, creating a '70s-style, five-pocket, high-rise trouser and an Audrey Hepburn-inspired refined skinny jean with stove pipe legs, named “the Audrey.”

Past inspiration: A '70s-style high-rise trouser is one of the Fall line's retro-inspired items.

At the more expensive end are stretch leather jeans, a limited run of shearling capelets and a bi-color, berry and brown leather tailored women’s pilot jacket.

Jason Ferro, director of the men’s denim line, described the men’s look as “jeanswear meets sportswear.” He said the collection remains true to Americana, but includes high-end textiles and modern cuts, so that it is more fashion-forward.

Modern Americana: Designers updated classic styles with more contemporary shapes.

The jeans are offered in denim and two-tone corduroy, with many of them designed with a dropped rise and yoke to give more attitude, Ferro said.

For traditionalists, designers also created a classic fit salvage jean inspired by Levi’s 501.

The men’s shirts are more tailored for this collection, shifting away from the cut of traditional Western shirts and made of striped chambray, as well as a variety of solid grays and blues.

Keeping with the modern look this fall is an updated trucker jacket and a black, wax-coated denim icon jacket with an attached hood.

The Fall line is expected to hit stores in late July or early August, and the Holiday collection will arrive at the end of September.
