Who Wears Short-Shorts? Dudes. Maybe.

Tom Selleck is going to be stoked.

According to this article in The Financial Times, designers are betting that men are ready for the short shorts of the '70s and '80s. Total Magnum P.I. steeze.

“The move towards shorter shorts is certainly gaining momentum,” Mr Porter’s buying director Toby Bateman told FT.com. “Conservatives who used to wear long board shorts seem to be moving to mid-length, and the more fashion-forward among us are moving towards the shorter shorts.”

Of course, no conversation about fashion is without cattiness. Except this time, instead of women being under the microscope, men's bodies were the snark target. Like so: “The American body is a bit overbuilt on top while legs are covered up,” designer Michael Bastien, long a proponent of men’s short shorts, told FT.com. “Europeans’ bodies are more natural and thus there lies no fear in showing a bit more leg.” OUCH.

But not everyone is convinced dudes are going to bare their gams.

Barneys New York's GMM said the retailer has been selling shorter shorts like hot-cakes, but thinks the average guy probably won't buy into the trend. “Men in the US are more conservative in general with their style,” he said. “They might wear a strong colour or pattern but they wear their shorts long.”
