Los Angeles Fashion Week: Dual Society

Last year, Rey Aquino’s menswear took inspiration from the 20th century—think English punk, Mod and Edwardian looks. With the debut of Aquino’s Dual Society line, Aquino looks to the past and the future for inspiration. Think steampunk, the science-fiction genre that mixes the Victorian world with 21st-century technology.

Aquino previewed eight pieces on March 11 at Voyeur nightclub in West Hollywood, Calif. One look was a Gangs of New York–like sweater, with an interesting keyhole-shaped cutout below the neck. One jacket took inspiration from the 18th century. It was a look from American Revolution–eramilitary coats, specifically the coat’s prominent high collar. While the high collar gave the jacket a dramatic edge, the rest of the piece had a peacoat silhouette, which dovetailed with the function of Aquino’s Fall 2011 line—protection from cold weather. Another piece was a dark suit with a skinny tie, which probably could fit in any era. —Andrew Asch
