STYLE FILE: OLAF SCHMIDT

You may have spotted him last July at the inaugural edition of Home Textiles Sourcing Expo in New York and if you’ve ever been to Heimtextil in Frankfurt, then you’ve definitely seen him! He’s the impeccably dressed Vice President of Textile Fairs at Messe Frankfurt, Olaf Schmidt.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Germany. My previous jobs enabled me also to learn about different cultures – the world and the people in it are so diverse. They enrich our lives and, of course, our business.

What is your favorite color?

Classic black and blue, of course. For a long time, it was fashionable to wear violet in Europe. I liked that! I enjoy seeing colors change with fashion – it makes life more fun.

Name an item in your wardrobe that you can’t live without.

Scarves as fashion accessories – drape them loosely around your neck and wear them with a business suit or a casual denim look.

How would you describe your personal style?

Young, business fashion with an emphasis on good cuts and not too conservative. Details in and on the garments are important! In my leisure time I wear jeans with extraordinary washes, combined with a nice t-shirt and a cotton jacket.

Does your home reflect this same style?

In general, less is more. I love white furniture and fabrics in combination with accent colors. A colorful wallpaper or structured decorative fabric, for example, will make a room look unique. Generally, a home must never seem too full. Light is also very important for a cozy atmosphere.

What was the best part about coming to New York for the textile shows last July?

New York is incredibly fashionable. It is where the pulse of fashion beats. The furnishing trends in NYC are unparalleled in the world. The international label shops alone are worth a visit – textiles are, of course, very important here. The people in the streets are extremely well dressed. We mirror these trends in our textile trade fairs – materials, colors and structures are at the focus. I love the top exhibitors, and of course the people who come to visit the important brands at our trade fairs.
