CityTarget Moving into Westwood

There's going to be a new retail kid on the block in Westwood next year.

Target Inc. is planning to take over an empty retail space once occupied by Home Depot's Expo store, the higher-end version of the home supply store that ended up shuttering all its doors a few years ago.

Target will be opening a version of what it calls a CityTarget store, geared for a more urban area. Right now, there are no CityTarget stores in California. But by 2012, there will be two in Los Angeles, one in Westwood and another in downtown at 7th and Figueroa streets. The Westwood store is slated to open some time in July 2012, followed by the downtown Los Angeles store in October.

The Westwood store at 10861 Weyburn Ave. will occupy 98,000 square feet and is geared for that urban resident into mid-century furniture and trendy clothing. Perfect for those students at UCLA, who will be bargain hunting.

CityTarget stores, which are smaller than Targets traditional stores, are a new concept being rolled out in select markets. Other cities that will be getting them next year are San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago.
