Dress for Good

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof has a moving column today about a Kenyan single mother, Jane Ngoiri, who supports her family by making children’s clothing out of old bridesmaid and wedding dresses.

The story includes a link to Kristof’s blog which includes information for anyone interested in donating dresses to Ngoiri.

I especially like the comment section where one New Hampshire woman who will soon celebrate her 48th wedding anniversary offered her poie-de-soie silk taffeta wedding gown. Another woman, based in Pennsylvania, offered to drop dresses off at the New York Times the next time she’s in town to visit her daughter. And a third—a sewer based in Florida—asks what else Ngoiri needs “Big spools of thread, mostly white? zippers> buttons? lace? Please let me know.”
