Self Edge Gets a New Union Special

Denimheads, you are an addicted and obsessed rare breed indeed.

Self Edge denim, which has stores in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, just scored a "new" vintage Union Special 43200G chainstitch machine. Because Self Edge is for the kind of guys “that dream of rainbow selvedge and obsess over patina” we are going to trust their enthusiasm that this find is a really big deal.

Self Edge carries denim and leather goods made with the most OCD and meticulous quality standards by denim junkies around the globe. The Self Edge blog details the specifics of the Union Special sewing machine, including how difficult they are to find in the United States (really difficult) and why (because the Japanese bought them all up in the 1980s). The gallery of photos detailing this particular "new" machine is as extensive as baby’s first footsteps:

We have just acquired what we feel to be one of the rarest Union Special 43200G machines in existence, a new one. One that has never been used and still has the sample piece of denim hanging out of it's teeth which they test the machine at the factory with before strapping it into a small crate. We went back and forth on whether or not we should be spending a small fortune on a machine that would essentially be redundant considering we already have enough chainstitching machines for our stores. We couldn't resist and honestly bought it purely for the reason of wanting to fondle the thing in person, photos weren't enough. We wanted to hear its purr as it ripped through hems faster and smoother than any other machine we've seen.

All Self Edge locations have a Union Special for hemming, but to get yours hemmed by this specific, like new, beautiful piece of old technology at the nimble tailoring skills of Julian Dash of Holy Stitch, head to the Self Edge San Francisco location.
