Online Tax Law Signed

Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law legislation requiring Internet retailers that don’t have stores in the state to charge consumers sales tax on their purchases. The signing ceremony was held Sept. 23 at the San Francisco headquarters of Gap Inc. Although the law goes into effect immediately, Californians won’t be charged online sales tax until Sept. 15, 2012, in an agreement worked out with Amazon.com.
