Waiting to take flight on Virgin America, based in San Francisco

Banana Republic's design team in San Francisco will be soaring after the new uniforms they designed for Virgin America take flight on Aug. 8.

Banana Republic's creative director Simon Kneen sat down with his design team and spent 18 months brainstorming with the airline's creative and brand teams, airport teammates, crew and in-flight people to develop a chic, practical uniform that will help celebrate the airline's fifth anniversary.

Performance fabric was used to accommodate the long days that many crew members endure.

The result is an array of styles for Virgin America's pilots, in-flight and guest service crew.

For men, there are nine styles that include leather jackets, lined mac coats, striped-sleeve sweaters, woven shirts and pants. For women, there are 13 styles that include a classic pencil skirt, slim dress, trousers, leather jacket and trench coat. All these looks can be paired with a silk print scarf and slim plaque belts.

All looks include classic aviation touches such as shoulder tabs and pockets with buttons.

Banana Republic joins other designers in creating in-flight uniforms. Los Angeles designer Richard Tyler several years ago created the looks for the Delta Airlines crew. The uniforms debuted on the runway n New York.

And here's a video sharing how that design process took place.
