Gypsy Junkies

Designer Marcus Paglialonga was speaking to his inner gypsy when he created his Fall 2012 collection, which mixed a bohemian vibe with rock ’n’ roll glam. It was seen on the runway March 10 during Concept L.A. Fashion Week at the Ace Gallery,  Los Angeles.

The rock ’n’ roll glam part of his Gypsy Junkies label was seen in the various hues of rich crushed velvet fashioned into dresses, pants and coats. There was even a bell-bottoms pants silhouette to conjure up a certain Jimi Hendrix feel. Other pant styles included cigarette legs and skinny cropped bottoms.

Long, slouchy sweaters and flowing coats were examples of the boho feel as well as rich floral print that Paglialonga developed with his fabric providers to mix into dresses, blouses and pants.

Crushed velvet in dark jewel tones—from deep blue to bright maroon—took center stage in many of the styles. “I am a classic rock ’n’ roll enthusiast,” Paglialonga said.  “But I was embracing the gypsy feeling with the dark jewel tones.”

This is the fifth collection for Paglialonga, a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. Paglialonga employed silks, chiffons, jerseys and a velvet lace burnout to inject a breezy, devil-may-care feel to the entire collection.

Boyfriend jackets and an oversized fake-fur vest gave the lineup a comfortable feel. There was even a bit of the schoolgirl look mixed into the collection, as seen in a high-waisted skirt with oversized straps and a plaid dress fitted at the waist and then flared to a flirty skirt.—Deborah Belgum
